Brian McCarthy Obituary

BRIAN WILLIAM McCARTHY of Southampton, NJ, passed away on Sunday, March 22nd, 2026 at age 88. Born in Liverpool, England, and raised in Maghull, Lancashire, he is the son of the late James G. McCarthy and Mary A. (nee Smith) McCarthy. Brian immigrated to the United States in 1967 after traveling the world as a merchant mariner on many ships including Cunard’s Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. Brian lived in Willingboro, New Jersey for almost 50 years, but resided in Leisuretowne, at Buckingham Palace, for the past five years.

He is the Beloved Husband of Patricia McCarthy (nee Hill). Loving Father of Gary J. McCarthy (Catherine), Sharon E. Papagno (James), Andrea M. Chinosi (John), and Collette P. Gil (Joshua). He is also survived by his sister Sylvia M. Sawbridge (Paul), brother Colin J. McCarthy (Toby); grandchildren: Edward J. McCarthy (Kristen), Helen McCarthy Malkus (Carter a.k.a. Chelsea), Grace McCarthy Greene (Stephen), James N. Papagno, Noah J. Gil, Jonah M. Gil, Elijah J. Gil, Julian B. Chinosi, Ava E. Chinosi, Evan C. Chinosi and Christian M. Chinosi; great grandchild Mia J. McCarthy; nephews: Darren McCarthy, Gavin McCarthy, Jamie Byrne, and Timothy Sawbridge; and nieces Nicola Byrne, Philippa Barker, and Gillian Rieuwerts. He is predeceased by his sister Hazel A. Byrne, brother-in-law John C. Byrne, sister-in-law Christine McCarthy, and nephew Joseph Sawbridge.

Brian retired as a Quality Control Engineer for Circle F / GTE Sylvania in Trenton and worked for Miller Ford in Mount Holly for many years. He was a Past Grand Knight and member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5337 and a long-time volunteer at Corpus Christi Church in Willingboro. Recently, he found great joy as a parish member at the Church of the Holy Eucharist in Tabernacle.

Brian was a Englishman and U.S. citizen. He was an avid supporter of Everton Football Club (Liverpool, England) and loved chatting about proper football at Ott’s with his best friend Pete Hatton. He also loved watching Fox News or anything British on television. More than anything, Brian will be long remembered for his Catholic faith and the love and pride he showed in his family.

Friends and family are invited to his viewing on April 1, 2026, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Eucharist, Medford Lakes Road, Tabernacle. Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Parkview Cemetery at Kirby’s Mill in Medford, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (T2T.org) or the Pancreatic Cancer Network (PanCan.org) in Brian’s name.  (BradleyStow.com)
