Janet Scheffler Obituary

JANET ANN (nee Coyle) SCHEFFLER passed away April 1, 2020 at the age of 63 after a long battle with brain cancer. A service will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at 10 a.m., more information to follow. An additional memorial service will be held in the fall.

Born to Kay and Donald Coyle on July 7, 1956, Janet was a vivacious reader, excellent chef and a musical lover. Growing up, Janet always loved to learn, which led her to Bethany College to study architecture, but ultimately she ended up at The Ohio State University to study computer science. After college, she moved back to New Jersey, where she met her former husband Steven Scheffler. The two wed in 1990, and had one son, Robert John Scheffler in 1992.

Janet loved to live. She enjoyed traveling around the world, from exploring Japan to most recently visiting Switzerland with her family. She was never without a good book, and she instilled the love of reading into her son and her nieces and nephews. If you needed a good read, all you had to do was ask. And if you were at the beach, you could find Janet under a shady umbrella reading a good book while listening to the sounds of the ocean.

The holidays were her favorite time—she loved to have her family over for Christmas Eve dinners. Some years the number of people varied, but she would cook a feast of fishes, charcuterie, soups, breads and more, because she loved the spirit of Christmas.

Janet worked for the Moorestown Visiting Nurses as the IT manager for over 25 years. She enjoyed helping support the nursing staff so she could help others the best way she knew how. She was also devoted to her church family, getting involved in numerous committees, teaching a variety of classes of all ages, taking photos at events, participating in a wide variety of volunteer opportunities throughout New Jersey and regularly attending worship.

Janet’s pride and joy was her son, Robert. She always knew she wanted to be a mom and wanted to see her child become a doctor. It’s still a family joke, with a thick European accent that wasn’t native to her, “my son, the docta!” Robert was Janet’s world.

Throughout Robert’s childhood, Janet was a devoted mother, fueling his interests from learning new languages, to exploring and studying bacteria. Seeing her son defend his doctoral thesis at Princeton University recently was the moment she most looked forward to seeing.

Janet is survived by her son, Robert Scheffler, brother Roger Coyle (Nancy), nieces Jamie Coyle and Caroline Gazzara-McKenzie (Ethan), and nephews Brian Coyle and Mak Gazzara, in-laws Eric and Carolyn Scheffler.
