John Rader Jr. Obituary

JOHN CHARLES RADER, Jr. (known to all as “Jack”) of Medford, NJ went peacefully home to the Lord on Wednesday, April 1st, 2020. He was 77 years of age and passed while surrounded by his loving and devoted wife and children.  Born of humble roots in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Scranton in 1964 and proudly lived the core values of his Jesuit education throughout his life. Jack often spoke of how the Jesuit traditions challenged him not only to learn, but how to think. As an English major, Jack had a passion for literature and was an avid, lifelong reader. After college, he was hired by the National Security Agency in Washington, DC as a Computer Programmer.  Jack married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Anne Martin, in 1965, and the couple lived in Greenbelt, Maryland before moving to Edison, NJ, then Marlboro, NJ. They eventually resided in Medford, NJ, where they built a home in 1972. It was in Medford where they raised their family while Jack went onto have a successful career in Information Technology. He retired as a Vice President of Systems after 30 years at Cigna Corporation and upon completion of his final project, Cigna’s successful transition to the new Millennium “Y2K”.  Jack had extraordinary qualities of generosity, kindness, inner strength, curiosity, and a true love of life. He was known for sound judgement, disciplined work ethic, and a solid moral compass. Jack was a fervent Philadelphia Eagles fan, holding season tickets at Veteran’s Stadium where he took his son Jay to every game as a child. He was elated to witness an Eagles Super Bowl win in 2017, where his son Jay and grandson Jake could be present. He also was a faithful Villanova Basketball fan, the alma mater of his daughter Jennifer. He celebrated three Villanova National Championships with his family in 1985, 2016 and 2018. As a spectator, nothing brought him greater joy than watching his grandchildren play ice hockey, lacrosse, football, wrestling, field hockey, softball and basketball. He was known in the ice rinks and on the sidelines as “Papa Jack”.  Jack’s greatest passion was his family and his most precious time was spent at the family home in Ocean City, NJ, where everyone would gather in the summers. His fondest moments were on the 44th Street Beach, laughing and enjoying the summer days with family and close friends. He adored his grandchildren, and took enormous pride in their successes. He and his wife Joyce traveled the world together, and spent many winters in Naples, Florida where Jack enjoyed golfing and spending time with dear friends. He was a member of Saint Mary of the Lakes Roman Catholic Church in Medford, NJ.  Jack has been a devout husband to his beloved wife, Joyce Rader, for the past 54 years. She was truly the love of his life. He is the loving father of John Charles (Jay) Rader III (Barbara Noone) and Jennifer Lange (Shawn). He is also the cherished Papa of five grandchildren, John Charles IV (Jake) and Lauren Rader, and Cooper, Paige, and Sabrina Lange.  Jack is also survived by his brother, Philip Rader of W. Bloomfield Michigan, his sister, Lois Girbert of Grove City, Ohio, and many close cousins and dear friends.  The family requests prayers at this time. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
