Walter Link Obituary

WALTER JOHN LINK passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at the age of 92.  Walt was born on November 21, 1929 in Chicago, IL to Josephine (nee Sefranak) and Walter Christian Link.

Walter is survived by his wife of 63 years, Cynthia Carol Luck Link; his daughters Allison Diane Link Christian (Wales Jr.); Elizabeth Ann Link; Victoria Daniels (David); and 6 grandchildren, Wales M. Christian III (Lauren Torres); Joshua M. Kapulskey; Jacob B. Kapulskey; Laura D. Christian; Rachel S. Link; Kyrah A. G. Daniels; Ellyanah J. Daniels; and Seylah R. Daniels.

Walt was born one month after the 1929 Stock Market Crash, so as a Great Depression child, he learned to fix everything in the house, from changing the filaments in his mother’s toaster to rebuilding a used bike he received for his 10th birthday.  Walt once said that bike was his greatest gift because “it gave me freedom.  I could bike to visit my uncle’s store in Chicago and I could earn money by starting a paper route”.  In 1951 he was drafted into the U.S. Army.  As a newbie corporal, Walt volunteered to become the company’s electrician.  He quickly learned the two tents that needed electricity 24/7: the officer’s mess hall and the commanding officer’s tent.  Once he was discharged from duty, he completed his degree at the University of Illinois, took a job as an electrical engineer on Long Island, and while attending church he met the “prettiest girl he had ever seen”, Cindy.  After a two-year courtship, Walter Link and Cynthia Luck married on June 7, 1959 at Grace Lutheran Church in Malverne, NY.  The couple settled in Greenlawn, NY and 10 months later, Allison was born.  Two babies later – Elizabeth and Victoria – the family was complete.

As a family man, no problem was too big for Walt to tackle: whether it was gluing a delicate porcelain vase back together, or planning a 3-floor addition to his home, Walt was the MacGyver of the Link household.  His catchphrase was “Daddy fix”.  Walt lived to make his “girls” happy.  A favorite memory was every Valentine’s Day, Walt would hand-deliver a huge flower bouquet to his “Pussycat”, but would always give an individually-wrapped pink carnation to each of his “babies”.  As an athlete, Walt played some football in high school and, later in life, he excelled at bowling.  In fact, during his bowling career at Huntington Lanes, Walt scored two perfect 300 point games!

Always flashing the proverbial wide-toothed grin and sporting a spring in his step, ask Walt how he’s doing and he’d answer “Tip-top shape”!  Walter was the epitome of positive attitude and Energizer Bunny.  He has been described as the “greatest dad who ever lived”.  He was a loving husband, a devoted daddy, a fierce friend, and a hard worker.  Walter leaves a gap as wide as the Grand Canyon in the lives of his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and countless family and friends.
