Catherine A. (Barry) Barry

Dr. Catherine A. Barry, died peacefully on July 26, 2018. She was born on Nov 7, 1927 in Providence, RI, raised in Woonsocket. Catherine is survived by her beloved sisters, Mary Barry, Woonsocket, RI, & Margaret Zarek, Portsmouth, RI, & her beloved friend, Janet M. Leonard, Medford, NJ.  After HS Catherine entered the Sisters of Mercy of Cumberland, RI; an active order founded in Dublin in the 19th Century by Mother Catherine McCauley, who dedicated her order to the service of the poor & the sick & to educating youth.  While in the order, Catherine completed her bachelor’s degree & completed her doctoral work at Fordham University, NY, and in France. She taught in elem, HS & college classrooms for 44 years. After 23 yrs. with the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine left the order, though she never forgot the wonderful people & all they had done for her.  In 1970 she was a Professor of French & chaired the foreign languages department at William Paterson College in Wayne, NJ, where she taught for 21 yrs.  The happiest event of her retirement has been her ass’n with the lay movement, Contemplative Outreach founded by Father Thomas Keating of the Cistercian order, being taught the practice of Centering Prayer by Contemplative Outreach representatives; it was an answer to a lifetime of searching.  She was grateful for all the kindnesses & affection of the Medford Leas community—especially the attentive nurses & aides--who made it possible for her to live her contemplative calling in the last years of life.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Medford Leas Res Assistance Fund, 1 Medford Leas Way, Medford, NJ 08055 are requested.
