Barbara Mattia Obituary

Barbara Carol Mattia (nee Aaronson), age 86, of Medford, NJ passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.  She was born in Brooklyn, NY to Helen (nee Wolfe) and Michael Aaronson.

In her younger years, Barbara enjoyed going to the bingo hall with friends, and she loved the casino life in Atlantic City. She enjoyed the luxury accommodations, dining and shows down at the shore. She did like to gamble a little as well. In addition, Barbara enjoyed her Philadelphia sports teams. She especially loved her Phillies. Every year, everyone on her email list received the spring training schedule as soon as it was available. Of course, there was the imminent follow up email with the regular season schedule immediately upon its release. Barbara did not believe that anyone should miss a single game that involved her beloved Phillies. Any time that Barbara would “talk Phillies”, she would refer to the individual players only by their first names, as if they were her personal friends. Everyone Barbara touched was left with that feeling of friendship, love, caring and companionship.

Barbara’s true passion in life was reserved for her family.  Nothing brought her more joy than to spend time with all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Sunday breakfast was the centerpiece of her social experiment. Every Sunday morning at 9:15 was the beginning of “my time” with the family. Each week she would enjoy this time with a rotating group of children, grandchildren, great grand children and her beloved husband Gregory, and nothing could get in the way of that.

Barbara adored and doted on her grandchildren, and great grandchildren endlessly.  She always had a kind and compassionate ear to bend.  She offered advice on life that could only come from the experience and wisdom of living a long life rich with all the trials and tribulations associated with that.  Whether it was counseling her adult children with adult problems, or calming the fears of a young grandchild experiencing thunder for the first time, she always knew just what to say.  To her adult children and even grandchildren, she might advise to “take a deep breath and really think about it before you decide what to do”.  “The angels are bowling in heaven” she would say to the young and fearful child during a thunder storm. Barbara was the quintessential kind and compassionate matriarch of her family. She was happiest when she knew that her grandkids and great grandkids (and the entire family) were thriving and happy.

Barbara is the beloved wife of Gregory John Mattia, Sr., dear sister-in-law to Mary Rose Mattia, loving mother of Gregory, Jr. (JoAnn), and Robert Ellin (Linda), and Michael Ellin (Nicole), and Stacy (deceased), adoring “Nani” of Gregory III, Kyle, Zachary, Madison, Jayson, Aaron, Amanda, Joseph, Richard and 10 great grandchildren, dear sister of Dolores (Myer), and David (deceased).
