Donald Eugene Poorman, of Vincentown, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 13, 2023, at the age of 94. He was born in Canton, Ohio to Louise (nee Smith) and Harry Poorman. He was the second oldest of 7 children.
Don spent 20 plus years in the United States Army. He retired a 1st Sergeant. While stationed in Japan, he was honored by the Japanese government for saving a drowning local boy. He served 2 tours of Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. It was while stationed in Germany and sitting in a beer tent, that he met a German Fräulein named Brigitte, who would later become his wife. His 2 daughters were born in Germany. After his military career, he worked for 20 years for Burlington County as a probation officer for the county courts. He was a loving & devoted family man. There were vacations to the Jersey Shore, the Poconos, and the Catskills. And of course, the obligatory family drive on the weekend. After retirement, Don & his wife finally got to travel alone together. They took trips to Germany, Austria, & Italy. There were bus tours to the Southern United States, to the Northeast, and to Canada. In his twilight years, Don was content to stay at home. He loved his home and being out in the yard, taking care of the flowers or feeding the birds. On a warm day, you could find him sitting outside, smoking one of his little Avanti cigars, listening to music on his “boom box” and enjoying the nature that surrounded him. He was forever a huge fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
One afternoon, last year, after being diagnosed with his illness, while sitting in his favorite chair, he said. “I’ve lived a good life”. And that is all one can ever hope for.
Don is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years Brigitte K. (nee Linke), his daughters Yvonne Poorman and Denise Poorman. His sons Ronald and Donald Poorman. His grandson, Michael and nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son Steve (Denise) Poorman.
