Dr. Hillard C. Sharf, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Medford, NJ on September 21, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born in Philadelphia, PA, on December 24, 1949, to Bernarr and Ruth Sharf, Hillard's life was one of dedication, brilliance, duty, and honor that was evident in everything he did.
Dr. Sharf earned his BS in Physics and Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University before attending Hahnemann Medical College for his medical degree. After completing a residency in internal medicine at George Washington University, he pursued a neurology residency at the renowned Cleveland Clinic. Hillard went on to establish himself as an esteemed neurologist in New Jersey, eventually becoming a partner at Neurology Consultants in Cherry Hill. His work extended to affiliations with Cooper, Virtua, Lady of Lourdes, and other local hospitals. In the later years of his career, Dr. Sharf became one of the pioneering telemedicine neurologists with Specialists On Call, where he worked for over a decade before retiring from medicine.
Beyond his distinguished medical career, Hillard was a man of many passions and interests. A certified SCUBA diver, he explored underwater worlds across the globe. His love for fine wines extended well beyond study—he relished tasting them too, and traveled far and wide doing so. Hillard was also an avid enthusiast of firearms training, artisanal cooking and fine dining, the arts and music, skiing, travel, history, and sports (always rooting for the Eagles of course — go Birds!). He was a regular theatergoer and may very well hold the unofficial record for amount of times attending the Broadway production, Phantom of the Opera, having logged somewhere between 50 to 60 performances.
While Hillard was an expert in many arenas, what he most excelled at and was known for was his unwavering commitment to caring and providing for his loved ones. He made it his constant duty to be a reliable and active presence in their lives, and to support them and celebrate their successes. When Hillard cared about and loved someone, it was for life. He was truly a man of integrity, loyalty, service, and commitment in any endeavor or role he took on. He was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, brother, son, friend, nephew, employer, colleague, and physician, respected and admired by all whose lives he impacted, of which there are countless.
Hillard is survived by the love of his life, his wife Gerri Sharf, whom he loved madly; his girls, Valerie and Alyssa; stepdaughters, Nicole and Kristina; five step-grandkids, Nicholas, David, Scarlett, Christian, and Jackson; and siblings, Carlyn, Bennett and Roger; and perhaps just a few thousand patients whose lives he saved or made immensely better in some way — and a myriad of others who will never taste a stinky cheese, hear a Beatles or Steely Dan song, use an industrial flashlight, or sip a heady glass of dry red without thinking of him. Those closest to him appreciated and loved him profoundly until the end of his life — and will continue to do so until the end of theirs.
