Eleanor Perry Merrick passed peacefully to the next life at the age of 98 on December 26, 2022 after a long but cheerful cognitive decline.
Eleanor was born November 9, 1924, the youngest of seven siblings in Belmont, MA. Her parents, Henry Perry of Boston, MA and Edith Nicholson of Moorestown, NJ resided in Dover and Nahant, MA. She attended Beaver Country Day School and, after a brief stint at Mills College in Oakland, completed her education at Radcliff College with a BA in music. Eleanor married Samuel V. Merrick III in 1947 with whom she lived in Alexandria, VA, Washington, DC and Bay Head, NJ until his death in 2000 shortly after their move to Medford Leas in Medford, NJ. They raised three boys, Rodney, Gregory and Thaddeus. Surviving her are: Thaddeus’ children, Sam and Natalie, and his wife, Janice; Gregory and his wife, Lily; and Rodney and his wife, Meg, and their three sons, Vaughan, Greg, Nikolaus and great grandson, Quintin King Merrick.
Her primary interests were in religious studies, classical piano and voice. She taught piano during most of her adult life in Washington and Bay Head and dedicated a great deal of time to assisting people in need. At Medford Leas she participated in many aspects of the community through her 80’s until dementia and polyneuropathy curbed her dedication. Parishes in which she was active included St. Anselm’s Abbey and Saint Peter in Washington, St. Peter in Point Pleasant, NJ, and Our Lady of the Lakes in Medford, NJ. Her warmth, sense of duty, sharp curious mind and mischievous sense of humor live on.
