Evelyn G. “Daisy” Ellis (nee Holloway)
April 27, 1925 -April 14, 2022
Evelyn Ellis passed away on April 14, 2022, at the age of 96, just two weeks shy of her 97th birthday. She was known for her infectious smile and enthusiasm for life. Many people told her she gave the best hugs in the world. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, and prayer warrior. Born in Haddonfield, NJ, she was a 1942 graduate and three-sport athlete (field hockey, basketball, tennis) at Haddonfield Memorial High School. After working at a bank for several years, she married Charles G. Ellis, a marriage that lasted 41 years until his passing. Her joyful, competitive spirit was evidenced when she attended her granddaughters’ sports games, rooting and clapping, and when she yelled at the TV if the Phillies or Eagles did not perform well: “Oh, nuts”, “What the devil’s wrong with you?” and “Yes, yes, yes” were favorite phrases. For many years, she worked at International Christian Relief, an organization that sent supplies to war-torn countries. She also taught Sunday School and Bible studies for decades at Haddonfield Bible Church, where she formed friendships that lasted lifetimes. Through letters and cards, she faithfully corresponded in longhand with friends and missionaries from Alaska, Texas, Japan, Africa, and the Philippines. In her late sixties, she was particularly proud of her visit to Israel to see the Holy Lands. She loved people. At Fellowship Alliance Chapel in Medford, she served on the greeting and missions’ teams, and was a member of the JOY (Just Older Youth) group. In later years, she lived at Rohrer Towers, serving as president of the tenants’ association. She also taught a Bible study there well into her 94th year. Besides spending time with family and friends and beloved dogs, she also enjoyed reading and visiting Ocean City each summer. During holidays, her signature potato salad and turkey stuffing anchored the meal. She was a fun and feisty woman, a woman of faith, and her laughter, love, and godly wisdom will be greatly missed.
She is survived by daughters Betty (Jim) Hurley of Shamong and Nancy Ellis of Mount Laurel; three granddaughters, Jessica (Scott) Bogdan of Cherry Hill, Jill Hurley of Shamong, and Amanda Pitchko of Philadelphia; great grandson, Jack Ellis Kovalevich; beloved nieces and nephews; and Haley, Colton, and Carson Bogdan, whom she adopted in her heart. She is predeceased by her husband Charles Ellis; her son Charlie, passed away at age 4 in 1957; and brothers Howard, Raymond, and Fritz. Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing between 9 and 11 a.m. on April 20, 2022, at Fellowship Alliance Chapel, 199 Church Road, Medford, NJ 08055. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. following the viewing. Interment will be at Locustwood Cemetery in Cherry Hill, NJ. Funeral arrangements under the care of Bradley & Stow Funeral Home, Medford, NJ 08055. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to missions at Fellowship Alliance Chapel https://www.myfac.org/giving or to VFW, Veterans of Foreign Wars, www.vfw.org.
