Gloria Hoyt Obituary

GLORIA MAY (Boushell) HOYT, 93, of Southampton, NJ, went home for Christmas to the arms of Jesus and her loving husband of 59 years, Edward Sr. She went peacefully on December 12, with her family bedside holding her hand. The family is planning a private interment at BC Wm Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 25th, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Vincentown, 39 Main Street in Vincentown, NJ.

A daughter of Howard and Loula Boushell, Gloria grew up in Merchantville, NJ with her six siblings in a house full of commotion, laughter, music, love and one bathroom. They also spent summers at their house in Ship Bottom, NJ. She attended Merchantville High School where she excelled in swimming & diving and theatre. She graduated in 1945 then worked as a proofreader for Curtis Publishing in Philadelphia. She met her one and only love, Edward, in 1953 and they married April 17, 1954. Four children then followed over eight years and Gloria once again found herself in a house full of commotion, laughter, music, love and one bathroom. The family moved to Vincentown in 1962 where Ed pursued his vocation as a nurseryman and landscaper while Gloria handled the bookkeeping. Once the children were all in school, she worked as a secretary for Henry and Sons Plumbing, then as a customer representative in CDs and savings at PNC Bank both in Medford, NJ. Her “retirement job” was as a sales associate for Reily’s Candy also in Medford.

Gloria shared her gift and gave honor to God as a mellifluous alto with several formal and informal choirs and ensembles. Her longest standing gig of 50 years was with the church choir of the First Baptist Church of Vincentown where she also served as a Junior Choir director and Sunday School teacher for pre-school children. Over the years she also created and directed many musical productions at the church and at Southampton Elementary School.

She instilled her love of music and swimming in her children and grandchildren as they also loved their time in Ship Bottom, competing in swimming & diving and participating in making music in bands and choirs.

She especially loved babies; she always said she hoped her assignment in heaven would be to work in the nursery. Those who were privileged to know Gloria will remember her as an attentive listener. She wore a constant smile and saw the good in everyone. Love radiated out of her every pore while her light shone before others.

Surviving Gloria are her children Edward Jr (her favorite child), Robert, Sally and Terry; her five grandchildren; and her sisters, Colleen and Auderie. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her siblings Vernon, Enid, Muriel and Connie.

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16”
