JAMES E. BOGLE JR. of Philadelphia, PA and Chiang Mai, Thailand passed away on March 3, 2022 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He was 94 years of age. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Mr. Bogle attended the Pennsylvania Military College and after military service in WWII receive a BFA from the School of Fine Arts, University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Bogle was a charter member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and spent most of his professional career abroad with assignments in 26 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.
The majority of his work was in Asia. Mr. Bogle’s first Asian assignment was that of land planner for the Bangkok-Thonburi City Plan (1958-1960). He was responsible for the planning of Malaysia’s “Jengka Triangle” a 100,000 acre resettlement scheme in Malaysia; which the World Bank considers to be one of its outstanding Third World projects. Mr. Bogle was active during the war in Vietnam preparing postwar plans. He also worked on new cities in Indonesia, the Philippines and was the Chief Planner for three “new industrial cities” projects in Egypt. He was also director of construction for the $5 Billion King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Mr. Bogle was cited by the governments of Egypt, Guyana, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Vietnam for his work in those countries. While stationed in Thailand, he became a founding member of the Mitrapab (Friendship) Educational Foundation, which raised money for a number of rural schools by holding parachute demonstrations in rural provinces. Mr. Bogle was made an honorary member of the Royal Thai Rangers parachute association. His travels and interests allowed him to acquire a collection of Asian art and paintings. In 2010 he gave 50 Southeast Asian paintings to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD and his book: Thai and Southeast Asian Painting, 18 through 20th Centuries was published in 2011 by Schiffer Publishing. His new book: Buddhist Cosmology, the Study of a Burmese Manuscript was published by Silkworm Books in 2016. Mr. Bogle enlisted in June 1944 and served with the Army Air Forces during World War II. He also served on active duty with the USAF during the Korean War and remained in the Air Force reserves until honorably discharged in 1972. He was an active member of the Army Navy Club in Washington, DC and the Royal Bangkok Sports Club. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Bradley & Stow Funeral Home, 127 Medford-Mt. Holly Road, Medford, NJ, at 12 pm.
