James Gillern Obituary

James J. Gillern passed away peacefully on December 22, 2022 at the age of 75.  He was born in Scranton, PA to Agnes (nee McDonald) and James P. Gillern and has been a resident of Medford, NJ for over 40 years.

Jim graduated from the University of Scranton before beginning his professional career and moving to New York City.  It was there that he met his wife of 50 years, Mary Ann, and their journey of parenthood began.  Four children later and a move to South Jersey had Jim working in various roles throughout his 40+ years as an employee of the Federal Government.

An avid sports fan, Jim enjoyed cheering on his favorite professional teams and was especially fond of baseball and rooting for the Phillies.  He coached his children’s youth teams in softball and basketball for many years and was, ultimately, their biggest fans while watching proudly from the stands as he rarely missed any game they were playing in.

In his retirement, Jim enjoyed spending time with his four grandchildren, reading or watching anything to do with history, and travelling.  Although he did not reach his goal of going to all 50 states, he managed to make it to 44 of them, with the most recent being Alaska as he treated his family to a trip there in 2018.

Although Jim could be a man of few words, his presence was felt in every room he entered and the love and pride he had for his family was evident to anyone who was lucky enough to know him.

Jim is the beloved husband of Mary Ann Gillern, the loving father of Kelly Harrolle (Matthew), Suzanne Gillern (Chad Cryer), J.R. Gillern (Jenna) and Pattie Gillern, adoring grandfather of Logan and Ansley Harolle, and Katherine and Molly Gillern, dear brother of Pat Gillern, Connie Melnick, and Michael Gillern (Lois).  He is predeceased by his brother, John Gillern.
