JANICE ELIZABETH (nee Gordon) WALKER, went to be with the Lord on April 1, 2025, in Burlington, New Jersey, after a lengthy illness. She was 80 years of age. Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on November 14, 1944, she is the daughter of George and Eugenia (nee Baynes) Gordon.
A resident for many years of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Mount Holly, NJ, Jan was a devoted wife, mother, teacher, and friend. She graduated from Southern Regional High School in Stafford Township, NJ, in 1962. She next graduated from Trenton State College in 1966 with a B.A. in Elementary School Education, and then went on to earn an M.A. with Reading Specialist certification from Glassboro State College in 1978. In 1992, she earned a certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) from Trenton State College. For more than 20 years, she worked at Rancocas Valley (RV) High School in Mount Holly, serving in a variety of teaching positions including reading, basic skills, and ESL.
Jan had a passion for poetry and music, and used to enjoy playing piano for her family. Her other interests included going to the beach, sailing, watching Jeopardy, and taking care of her beloved pets, Bucky the cat and Sherlock the beagle. Her children knew her as someone to count on in tough times, always there with a helping hand, no matter the distance or the circumstances.
She is survived by son Joseph and his wife Sherri (nee Warfield) Stecher; grandchildren Reagan Overton, Garrett Patterson, Nikolis, Chase, and Shawn; son Donald Stecher and grandchildren Liam and Haley; daughter Marguerite (nee Stecher) Riley and her husband Chuck Riley; grandchildren Jessica Torrez Riley; Samantha (nee Schuld) and her husband Cory McLaughlin; CJ and Morgan; and great-grandchild Leena Laine Torrez Riley.
She is also survived by her best friend, Peggy Madison, of Tuckerton, NJ. Peggy and Jan became fast friends while working together as reading specialists at RV, maintaining their friendship over the years and miles until the very day of Jan’s passing.
Jan was preceded in death by her loving husband Albert Walker, to whom she was married for 29 years. Al passed away on October 26, 2017.
A private ceremony will be held with immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.t2t.org) of Staten Island, NY, in Janice Elizabeth Walker’s memory.
