John Goudy Obituary

John T. Goudy, age 82, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, and coach whose greatest joy was his family. He passed away surrounded by the love of those he cherished most.

A devoted father of three and grandfather of six, John found his greatest joy in being present for his grandchildren, especially as he watched them take part in sports and other activities. He often said his most important role was that of a husband, father, and grandfather.

John shared 55 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mary Lou. Together they built a life rooted in faith, love, dedication, and service to family and community.

An educator at heart, John taught at Holy Cross High School and then at Lenape High School for over 30 years, where he made a lasting impact on generations of students. In addition to teaching, he coached both track and baseball, instilling discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship in his athletes. He also served as an advisor for the World Affairs Council, reflecting his deep interest in history, global understanding, and lifelong learning. Committed to education beyond borders, John participated in teacher exchange programs to Russia on two occasions, experiences that broadened his worldview and enriched his teaching.

A dedicated athlete, John ran more than ten marathons in Boston, NYC and in Philadelphia, and maintained a lifelong commitment to fitness and exercise. In his younger years, he worked as a lifeguard in Ventnor for over ten summers, developing a love for the ocean. His parents, John and Jean Goudy were vital members of the Ventnor community as his father was the Captain of the Ventnor Beach Patrol, while his mom worked in Ventnor City Hall.

John earned his undergraduate degree from Seton Hall University and went on to receive his master’s degree from Trenton State College. In recent years, John became an advocate for public safety in his community of Leisuretown.

John was a devoted Philadelphia sports enthusiast, especially his beloved Phillies. He loved running, walking, exercise, the beach, history, and sports—but above all, he loved his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched as a teacher and coach, and in the hearts of his children and grandchildren who will forever carry his lessons, encouragement, and unwavering support.

John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou, his children Carrie (David) Paul, John (Jennifer) Goudy, Kristen (Jamie) Sleeper and his grandchildren Addy, Avery, Sophie, JD, Reagan and Jack, sister-in-law Catherine McGroarty RSM, brother-in-law Tommy McGroarty (Dorothy) and many cherished family, friends, and neighbors.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
