Kathleen Carhart Obituary

KATHLEEN G. CARHART of Southampton, New Jersey, passed away on Wednesday, March 4th, 2020.  She was 63 years of age.  Born in Hammonton, New Jersey, she is the daughter of the late Calvin and Marjorie Heuman.

She was a high school chemistry teacher, who worked at Bordentown Regional High School in Bordentown New Jersey for the last 25 years, and prior to this at Baptist High School in Haddon Heights New Jersey. Beloved by students, Kathy was known for making chemistry fun and engaging, and for the large fish tank in the classroom, replete with plecostomas fish, turtles and even eels. In her final year at the high school she championed the AP Chemistry class for the first time, and built the curriculum herself.

Additionally, she dabbled in seashell collecting, fossil hunting, sand collections from around the world, light-houses, wooden animals, vintage children’s books, horses (particularly Acorn in Georgetown Texas), precious stones, coins, politics, atomic clocks, creches, antique furniture, Amish furniture, Vera Bradley, digging into her family history as far back as the 1800's and especially her black cat Dakota (“The Prince of Meadowyck”). An avid reader, Kathy had a personal library in the basement of her home that is unrivaled in size and subject. She enjoyed the outdoors and cherished time with her family at Ocean City New Jersey and Moosehead Lake Maine. She also enjoyed sitting at the pond in her back yard, or in the “blueroom” at her home in Southampton overlooking cherry blossom trees, where she would enjoy tea and the company of her many friends, who are as diverse and varied as her interests.

Her main interest however was her family, whom she loved fiercely, uniquely and completely. Kathy had a deeply personal relationship with everyone in her life, including her students, family, friends and colleagues. She was always available for a phone call, and would offer a listening ear and borrow from a wealth of wisdom, which she dispensed freely and naturally. She leaves behind a legacy of love, friendship, wisdom and joy, as well as a steadfast, marrow-deep faith in Christ.

She is the beloved wife of Philip R. Carhart, Jr. and the mother of Jonathan Calvin Carhart (Jessica Romaska) and Philip Ross Carhart III (Rebecca Carhart). She is survived by the aforementioned, as well as her granddaughters Mikalena and Mackenzie (whom she referred to as “my M&Ms”), her adopted grandsons Christian and Matthew Coates, and her brother Bruce Heuman (Diana).

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Saturday, March 7th from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the Bradley & Stow Funeral Home, 127 Medford-Mt. Holly Rd., Medford, NJ. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, March 11 at 5 PM at the Fellowship Community Church, 1520 Hainesport Rd., Mt, Laurel, NJ.
