Kevin Jay Custer (1957 - 2023) of Manayunk, PA and Medford, NJ died peacefully, at his brother's house on the morning of August 24th 2023, his family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 66 years old.
Kevin is preceded in death by his father Joseph Custer and the Loving son of Alfreda, brother of Christopher, and also survived by his niece Jennifer and several cousins. A special heartfelt thanks to Michele Kelly for being Kevin's guiding angel.
Born in Camden, NJ and raised in Medford, NJ he was proud graduate of Shawnee High School, class of '75.
Kevin's early career included positions as sales reps for Bausch & Lomb and RJ Reynolds. The majority of his career was spent as a State Tort Claims Investigator for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania where he retired after 26 + years.
Known as "The General" or "Cus" by family and friends, he was a colorful and fun bachelor, who could easily be spotted around town wearing his Hawaiian shirts in the summer or his blazers, ties and famous hats in the fall. He was no prisoner of customary or traditional styles. He created his own style. Good, bad, mismatched, it didn't matter. He was his own man of fashion.
Summertime down the shore was always a highlight of his, creating life long friends and memories. Kevin loved the shore, and always enjoyed his time with buddies in Margate and Sea Isle. His favorite places included The Springfield, The OD, Maynard's and his beloved favorite, Maloney's, and The Bike-a-thon.
The General enjoyed attending sporting events with family and friends. His favorite experiences included The Indy 500, The Super Bowl, The PGA and US Open Championships with his Dad, The 1980 and 1983 World Series (Phillies 1980 winning game to be exact!) and a longstanding tradition of Phillies Home Openers with his brother. Kevin was also an excellent ice hockey player, enjoyed playing baseball, softball, and golf (as long as that dreaded duck hook stayed in his bag!)
But closest to his heart was his love of the outdoors. He learned to fish and hunt at an early age from his dad, an avid outdoorsman. Later in life, after his dad had passed, many days were spent hunting with his cousin Mike Kernan and friend Stan Ryba. Kevin continued to hunt even as cancer took its toll, and also went on hunting as he received his cancer treatments, never complaining once.
He was the best drinking partner anyone could ask for. You could find him bellying up at Jays Elbow Room for a Jameson and ginger or having a fancy cocktail at the top of the Four Seasons. His laugh and sense of humor was infectious which made it easy for him to make friends wherever he went. He will be greatly missed....
Relatives and friends are invited to greet his family on Thursday, August 31st, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at the BRADLEY & STOW FUNERAL HOME, 127 Medford-Mt. Holly Road, Medford, NJ, where a Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 Noon. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. (www.BradleyStow.com)
