Mary Pilaar Obituary

MARY PILAAR of Leisuretowne, Southampton, NJ passed away on Thursday, January 18th, 2024 at the age of 75. Born Therese Maria Christina Pilaar in Driebergen-Rijsenburg, Utrecht, Netherlands on January 24th, 1948, she journeyed to America on a boat with her family when she was just a few months old. She lived in Haledon, NJ for most of her life and has resided in Leisturetowne for the past 9 years. She is the daughter of the late Johan and Josina Pilaar and beloved sister of Dingeman Pilaar and his wife Martha of GA, Casper Pilaar and his wife Mardelle of MD, the late Johan Pilaar, the late Willem Pilaar, and the late Josina Faber and her husband John Faber of NJ.

Mary was the first in her family to attend college, at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. She was a member of Theta Sigma Kappa sorority and had many fun times outdoors with her sorority sisters. During and after college, she worked for Acme Markets as a bookkeeper, where she stayed until she retired in 2010. She was also the primary caregiver for her mother for many years.

Mary enjoyed traveling, whether it was camping in the Great Smoky Mountains or Vermont, going to Disney World, relaxing on a cruise, or visiting family near and far. She loved Christmas, including reading Christmas novels, watching Hallmark movies, and making her famous stollen for everyone.

Above all, Mary loved spending time with her three generations of nieces and nephews, and became affectionately known as “Great Aunt Mar” as her family grew. She was always willing to play a game, make a craft, or take the kids out for fun. She taught herself to fish at an early age and passed on this skill to many of her nieces and nephews over the years.

Her family includes 11 nieces and nephews, 23 great nieces and nephews, and 10 (and counting) great-great nieces and nephews: Garry (Kathy) Faber and family, John (Karen) Faber and family, Pat (Keith) Damiano and family, Bernadene Stammer and family, the late Craig Pilaar, Richard (Michele) Vilaboy and family, Michael (Lauren) Vilaboy and family, Suzie (Ryan) Birch and family, Bonnie Jean (Peter) Diamond and family, Joelyn (Ryan) Mayo and family, and Eric (Mary) Pilaar and family.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Saturday, January 27th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM at the Bradley & Stow Funeral Home, 127 Medford-Mt. Holly Road in Medford, NJ. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
