Phyllis Mack Obituary

Phyllis Beatrice Mack, a remarkable woman who enriched the lives of many, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, in Medford, NJ, at the age of 85. Born on November 27, 1939, in Buffalo, New York, Phyllis dedicated her life to education, community, and the pursuit of knowledge.

A true academic, Phyllis was a beloved Professor of History at Rutgers University, where she taught from 1972 until her retirement in 2015. Her intellectual journey began with a BA from Barnard College, followed by an MA from San Francisco College, and culminated in a PhD from Cornell University. Her teachings in the History of Religion and Gender Studies inspired countless students, with courses like "Witchcraft and Magic," "Gender and Spirituality," "History of Jewish Women," and "The Enlightenment" leaving a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to have learned from her. Her scholarly contributions include the acclaimed books "Visionary Women: Ecstatic Prophecy in Seventeenth-Century England," and "Heart Religion in the British Enlightenment: Gender and Emotion in Early Methodism," which continue to influence the fields of history and gender studies.

Phyllis was not just a brilliant intellectual but also a warm, open-hearted individual who brought joy and laughter to those around her. Her sense of humor and deep curiosity about people from all walks of life made her a cherished friend and mentor. She found joy in singing, participating in various musical groups, from the "Sing" in Princeton to the Medford Leas choir, where she shared her love for music with her community.

Phyllis's legacy is one of love, laughter, and learning. She is survived by her loving wife, Katherine Verdery, and her devoted daughter, Victoria Mack. Phyllis's life was marked by the absence of her parents, Ina Rothman, and especially her beloved father, Edward Mack, who died early in her life.

As we remember Phyllis, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with passion and purpose. Her contributions to academia and her community will be cherished for generations to come. Those who knew and loved Phyllis can gather at Medford Leas in Medford, NJ, on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 2PM to celebrate a life that touched many through both word and song.
